Australia, a sovereign state made up of the continent of mainland Australia, the island of Tasmania, and a number of other islands, is situated in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean. Its 7,617,930 square kilometers of land area rank it as the sixth-largest nation in the world. Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to reach Australia. What we now know as Australia was given the moniker New Holland by the Dutch and Spanish explorers. The current population of Australia is 26,230,299. Although Australia has a vastly different climate than other regions of the world, it also boasts a distinctive flora and fauna. The platypus and the echidna are two of its most distinctive species. Additionally, dingoes are its distinctive national flower. The koala is the country's bird.
